The world is tuned into the UEFA Champions League semi final round.  Today: Bayern vs. Barcelona. Tomorrow: Real Madrid vs. Juventus.

Here in the Americas, two weeks ago, the Mexican club America was crowned the CONCACAF Champions League winner. One byproduct of the tourney: A reminder that monkey chants don’t only happen on the other side  of the pond. During the semi- final match up between MLS’s Montreal Impact and the Costa Rican club Alajuelense, fans lobbed racist chants at Montreal Impact winger Dominic Oduro,  Some fans also hurled projectiles onto the field.

In a news conference afterwards, Oduro told the media “We need to join hands together to help eradicate racism in the sport that we all love. ”

For the first time ever, CONCACAF levied economic punishment during Champions League play. Alajuelense must pay a fine and play their next home game at a neutral location.
